I’m Marian, a youthful retired educator from Vancouver, Canada who volunteered from 2010-2013 in Ethiopia with Cuso International an international development organization that sends people to over 40 countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean to share their expertise and build support for improving lives and reducing poverty. I worked in the education sector, living in basic but safe accommodations, getting by on a small monthly stipend that covered my living expenses.
In my first year (2010-2011 academic year) I led the Higher Diploma Program for 25 teacher educators at Woldia College of Teacher Education in Woldia, a town of about 45,000 friendly and welcoming people 520 km northeast of the capital city in the mountainous highlands of Ethiopia.
From September 2011- July 2013 my second and third years in Ethiopia, I worked as a Gender Advisor at the Gender Directorate of the Ethiopian Ministry of Education in the capital city of Addis Ababa, providing advice and assistance to my colleagues in the Directorate.

Hi Marian,
It has been a delight to discover your blog. I am a Canadian, living and working just outside of Assosa. I run an all girls boarding school for students in the region. I am hoping we can connect as I am trying to set up a volunteer program to bring passionate educators to the school. Fingers crossed! Take care, Andrea
